I’ve really enjoyed the last few weeks of Idol, with less drama and crazies and more actual singing competition. It might be a bit early to say it, but so far I’m pretty happy with the new take on the old show, and I have high hopes for a good season 13.
OK now, let’s see how it all went down. After the two hour show tonight we have the names of 17 of the Top 30 contestants, that will sing in the Live shows for America’s phone love and support. Like every year, the judges choose 15 girls and 15 guys, and those are the names we have so far:

Some thoughts for tonight:
People need to stop hiding behind “being different”. You can be different without using it as an excuse for every misstep along the line, and everything that didn’t quite go your way. Being different also doesn’t mean people need to give you more credit about the things you do like everybody that’s “not different”, such as singing. What I’m talking about is contestants MK and Alex, who, for me, wave the “different” flag a little bit too much. Alex seems to rely on that to get noticed, and I personally sense a fake vibe in him, like he’s overdoing it just so he appears even more distinctive, and it lacks believability for me. His safety blanket guitar, his face expression… None of that seems real to me. He looks like he’s proud of it, though, so a semi enthusiastic yay for being proud of who you are, no matter what others might think.
MK, on the other hand, seems like she’s used to people being rude to her because of who she is, and I don’t dig the “I’ll say it so they don’t” thing about her being gay. Unlike Alex, she sounds a little bit defensive about herself, and I don’t think she should be. It’s a singing competition, and her being gay shouldn’t matter. It’s worth mentioning that she is the first AI contestant to openly admit she’s gay, so it’s a somewhat milestone. As for her singing, though, that is the thing that matters, I couldn’t quite figure out if that’s her style or what, but I had a little trouble concentrating on her performance, because she would always sing a good one second after the instrumental, and that just sounded wrong for me. The judges loved her, the viewers did too, so it might be just me, but I’m not impressed.
I’m not happy about how they’re portraying Jessica Meuse so far. She seems to me like a totally nice person, and they kinda make her look like a b-tch. Truth is she tried to work with Lady Puberty who couldn’t handle his harmonies, and then she was perfectly polite to Momzilla. I’m sure “you’re rude” was the nicest thing she could’ve had said, I can think of a few other words that I would’ve used, and they’re not as pretty. They apparently wanted to show us how she couldn’t tell fellow contestant Jesse that she sounded good last night, but why would she, Jesse didn’t sound good. Jesse sounded like she was just waiting for her song to be over, both last night and on the little piece of Solo Round song they showed us. It happens, people lose the spark that kept them going, and maybe that happened to Jesse, I don’t know, but she was flat and uninterested. Not to mention she sang her Auditions song, one she should’ve been perfectly comfortable with, and she simply didn’t deliver.
They seem to want us to think Spencer Lloyd is a very good looking guy and total star material, but I don’t buy it. His original song was about as original as a pair of $30 Louboutin’s, and if it wasn’t for TPTB counting on his looks for some votes, he shouldn’t have made it to the Top 30.
A thought about the original songs. Lots of songwriters this year… Too much. It just looks like they’re all trying to pull an Angie Miller and get to be early favorites like her in season 12. Problem is, they’re just not good enough to be songwriters. Stick to singing. So far only Jessica Meuse’s original song was actually worth listening to, and she’s the only one that didn’t give me the “Come on, judges, be impressed that I write my own songs, why did I do it otherwise” vibe. Especially Spencer Lloyd’s ridiculous piece, does he even like that thing?
Also we see a lot of contestants that make it just to fill some sort of type the show usually has, like Emmanuel Zidor, who appears to be our new BGG – Black Gospel Guy, it’s like a WGWG, but with a lot less guitar and a lot more bow tie. Please, Jennifer, get the guy a nice pair of pumps and send him home. I don’t need a new Jacob Lusk/Joshua Ledet…
And a thumbs up for the judges this year, I absolutely love the panel, Keith is a sweetheart and seems to really care about the contestants, Jennifer is just beautiful, and so far we’ve seen a lot less being silly and a lot more good judgement from her, and Harry, oh, Harry, he’s absolutely awesome. I love how he can be both bluntly honest and tell the truth in people’s face, and not one bit rude and unpleasant at the same time. We’ve been mistakenly taking “douche” for “honest” lately, and I really appreciate the change. I haven’t enjoyed a judge panel this much before.
Now I’m looking forward for tonight’s episode and I hope Kenzie Hall makes it trough. I want to see more of that girl.
